Make Up of the Ancient Egyptians

Women wore red lip powder, dyed their hair and painted their fingernails. They outlined their eyes and colored their eyebrows with gray, black and green paint. Men also outlined their eyes and often wore as much make-up as women.

The green pigment called malachite was made from copper. The Egyptians applied it from the eyebrow to the base of the nose. Green eye paint was also put on their brows and corners of their eyes.

The black was called kohl, made from soot or lead. Rouge to color the face and lips was made from red ochre.

Both men and women wore perfume and jewelry, and thought that a lot of hair was a sign of uncleanliness. They used tweezers to remove facial hair.

Oils and fats were applied to the skin to protect it, mixed into perfumes and added to the incense cones worn on top of the head. It has been suggested that the cones were made of tallow or fat, which melted gradually, releasing fragrance.

Egypt Plans to Unify Prayer Calls

The Egyptian government has proposed unifying the call to prayer in Cairo by introducing a single call delivered by a radio network.
Religious affairs minister Mahmoud Hamdi Zaqzouq said there should be "one live voice" broadcast simultaneously from Cairo's 4,000 mosques.

Prayer calls are transmitted via loudspeakers of mosques five times a day. Mosques often announce the prayers two or three minutes apart, causing much confusion.

Mr Zaqzouq said muezzins (the official attached to a mosque, whose business it is to chant the azan - call to prayer - five times each day) would not be out of a job, as they could re-train as imams ("leader" of the mosque, the one who leads the congregational prayers), which are currently in short supply.

The government has said the plan may also be implemented in other cities in Egypt.

School ... A Pain in the Back?

A 'bad back' is often considered to be a complaint of older people, but many people don't consider the risk to a child's back, especially through carrying a heavy school bag.

As the spine is growing and developing it is vitally important to address spinal health issues for a number of reasons. Firstly, to prevent spinal stress and dysfunction that causes pain, which may affect study and participation in sport and recreation.
Secondly, to develop good techniques for spinal health that will carry through into adulthood.

Ensuring that your child is carrying a safe load to and from school is a good way to begin addressing their spinal health. Remind your kids that a back injury can impact their health and well-being for years to come, so it is important to take care.

Tips for packing, carrying & lifting a school bag:

In general, the load carried by your child should be less than ten per cent of their body weight.

A backpack with padded straps carried over both shoulders is the best choice for carrying a load. This will ensure that the weight of the load is evenly distributed over both shoulders.

A suitable backpack should be made of a firm material that prevents sag and keeps the load close to the spine. It should be fully adjustable to allow correct fitting to your child's back.

The way a backpack is packed can also impact on how easy it will be to carry. Encourage your child to place heavier items such as books closer to their back, with the lighter objects placed towards the outside of the bag.

Lift the backpack correctly. Show your child how to safely lift the bag by facing it, bending at the knees and lifting the pack with both hands while straightening their legs. They are then able to place the straps over their shoulders one at a time without placing too much pressure on their spine.

Do not pack the backpack with any unnecessary items. Keep items to a minimum.

Tell your child to put down the backpack whenever they can, for example, waiting for the school bus, in line at school, etc.
