Corals' Future ... The Good News & The Bad News

Corals could adapt to the higher sea temperatures caused by global warming, but increased levels of carbon dioxide will increase the acidity of the ocean.

The good news is that corals may be able to adapt and survive the predicted rise in ocean temperatures caused by global warming. Researchers studying the impact of temperature changes on Pacific corals before, during and after El Nino, have found that some are able to adapt by forming a symbiotic relationship with heat-resistant algae.

The not-so-good news is that the increased levels of 'greenhouse gas' carbon dioxide (CO2) will alter the acidity of the oceans. Researchers are currently investigating the implications of excess CO2 being absorbed into the oceans and forming carbonic acid. Over time, this process is anticipated to raise the overall acidity of the oceans. The consequences for marine life are unknown, but scientists fear that the outcome will prove disastrous.

The skeletal structure of hard corals is calcium carbonate, and increased acidity appears to reduce the amount of calcium carbonate available in seawater. With an estimated extra 20-25 million tons of CO2 entering the oceans every day, significant changes to acidity levels, and to marine life, are predicted to take place in the next 100 years.

School Bag vs Bad Back!

All over the world, parents, doctors, and educationists are worrying about the weight that children have to carry for school, and the effect it has on their backs, shoulders, and general health.

Carrying a heavy bag on the back causes forward leaning and bad posture, which can lead to improper weight bearing on the spine, and pains and aches in the back and shoulders.  Carrying a backpack weighing 15% of body weight makes a child or adolescent unable to maintain proper standing posture.  Children could get into bad habits like poor posture and slouching. Forward bending at the back makes the work of breathing harder. Children carrying bags weighing more than 10% of their body weight have been found to have poorer lung function. Children who use one strap bags (which put weight on one shoulder only) have particular problems.  These bags cause sideways deviation of the spine because of the asymmetric weight distribution, and this can cause long lasting back aches and damage.

Minimising School Bag Damage

  • The bag should not be more than 10% of the child's own weight.  A child weighing 30 Kg should not carry more than 3 Kg on his back.
  • Choose a schoolbag with broad, padded straps.  Narrow straps can squeeze nerves or blood vessels, and also chafe the skin.
  • Satchels and bags with one strap cause asymmetrical distribution of weight on the spine.  This can lead to long term back pain and other problems.
  • The child should always use both straps of the school bag.  Slinging the bag over one shoulder causes spine damage.
  • Bend at the knees with the back straight when lifting the bag.  Lift with the legs, not the back.
  • Teach the child to put down the bag when waiting at the bus stop, in assembly, etc.
