The EU at a Glance

European Union or EU is an international organisation of European states, established by the Treaty on European Union (the Maastricht treaty).

The European Union is a customs union and a single market. It has a single currency, the Euro (though some member states retain their own), and has a Common Agricultural Policy and a Common Fisheries Policy, and various initiatives to co-ordinate activities of member states.

15 Original EU Member States - Austria, Belgium, Denmark*, Finland, France, Germany, Grece, ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden*, United Kingdom*.

New EU Members - Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Eithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia.

The EU is already Egypt’s largest trading partner, accounting for 31 percent of Egyptian exports in 2001, including oil products, textiles, clothing, agricultural products and chemicals, while also exporting power-generating machinery, chemicals, food, agricultural products and transportation equipment. Within the EU, Italy, Germany, France and the United Kingdom alone account for over 70 percent of EU-Egyptian trade. There are several ways Egypt stands to gain from the expansion of the EU member states, specialty agricultural products and tourism.

Egypt also stands to benefit from the new member states by importing everything from milk to expertise.
