Known as tipping or service in western cultures, tipping in Egypt is called baksheesh. Baksheesh is a word you'll become very familiar with while in Egypt and the rules will quickly become evident. Baksheesh is a way of life in Egypt.

For travelers who are not used to constant tipping, demands for baksheesh for doing anything, to doing what seems like virtually nothing, can be quite irritating. However, you must remember that the salaries and wages in Egypt are shockingly lower than in western countries, so baksheesh is used as an essential means of supplementing income.

There are different categories of baksheesh. The first is "alms giving". One of the 5 tenants of Islam is giving alms to the poor. This makes the giver more holy by the action.

The second type is baksheesh "for services rendered." This is the closest to the western tipping practices.

The third category of baksheesh is "for the granting of favors". This includes seeing anything off the beaten track, like a closed tomb or being shown a secret location to take a beautiful photo. Usually the guards will come up to you and offer these services. After getting over the initial adverse reaction to the practice, it becomes expected and even enjoyable.

It is a good idea to carry small bills and lots of change with you. Don't flash your bigger bills as you might be asked for greater baksheesh! However, do not offer tips to professionals, businessmen, or others who would consider themselves your equals. You may seriously offend them by your act.

"Baksheesable" services can iinclude:

Parking your car
Being shown to your seat at the cinema
Opening a door
Stowing your luggage under the bus
Bringing your bags to and from your room
Being shown anything off the beaten track
Being shown the location for a good photo opportunity
Anyone going out of their way for you, whether to show you something or to make you more comfortable.

Baksheesh will make an easy time of receiving your mail in the chaotic post office, getting fresher produce at the souk, piping hot pizza delivery, prompt grocery delivery and sometimes even skipping the queue. Baksheesh is not necessary when asking for directions.

So use your good judgment and don't be intimidated into paying baksheesh when you don't think the service deserves it. At the same time, keep in mind that more things warrant baksheesh here than anywhere else in the West. Baksheesh is not only a tradition expected of foreigners as Egyptians have to "baksheesh" too.

Giftun Islands Petition

A group of Italian investors are approaching the Government with a proposal for a massive development plan on Giftun Island. Needless to say, such a plan would have devastating effect on the environment and would also establish an extremely dangerous precedent of giving away National Parks to developers.

The Governor of the Red Sea, General Saad Abou Rida, has already taken a strong stand against this scheme. If you are concerned with this issue, please show your support by signing the on-line petition. The petition can be found at:

Coming Soon .... The Last Samurai

Set in the late 1870s, this epic film depicts the beginnings of the modernization of Japan, as the island nation evolved past a feudal society, as symbolized by the eradication of the samurai way of life. We see all this happen from the point of view of an alcoholic Civil War veteran turned Winchester guns spokesman, Captain Woodrow Algren (Cruise), who arrives in Japan to train the troops of the emperor, Meiji, as part of a break away from the long-held tradition of relying on employed samurai warriors to protect territories, as the emperor's new army prepares to wipe out the remaining samurai warriors. When Algren is injured in combat and captured by the samurai, he learns about their warrior honor code from their leader, which forces him to decide which side of the conflict he actually wants to be on.

Mosquito Bites

The usual reaction to mosquito bites is a local skin inflammation that is red, raised and very itchy. If your child scratches the bite, it may become infected as well. Here's what you can do for your children to help ease the itch and pain caused by mosquito bites.

* Apply anti-itch creams like calamine as needed to help prevent scratching.

* Use anti-inflammatory creams to help ease the inflammation and itching.

* If there is severe itching and multiple bug bites use antihistamines. As they tend to make children drowsy, they work particularly well at night.

* Keep your child's fingernails cut short to prevent scratching and/or apply cotton gloves.

* Apply cold wet compresses to the area to ease discomfort.

* Have your child wear long pants and long sleeves (if the temperature is bearable).

* Make sure window screens are used if you keep windows open in your home.

* Use insect repellant to help prevent bites from occurring.

Insect Repellant

Insect repellants containing the active ingredient "Diethyl-m-toluamideis" are the best insect repellants in terms of effectiveness against mosquitos, flies, gnats, ticks and other insects. The higher the concentration the better it works. For children, however, a concentration of 10 percent or less is recommended to prevent side effects and toxicity.

Insect repellants can be applied directly to the skin or most clothing. Be careful not to put it near your child's eyes, mouth, open wounds or the hands of infants who may touch their eyes or mouth.

Citronella, a plant-derived alternative, repels mosquitoes but is less effective than insect repellants containing Diethyl-m-toluamideis. Citronella can be bought in the form of oil and candles and is readily available in Egypt.
