Hurghada Developed
by Allan Orpin

Some years long since
In this same place
I stood and watched
The waves roll in
To break and scatter
On the beach
Through all around me
Now has changed,
Where once was desert
Now stand blocks and villas
Stark in different shapes
To house the tourists
Who now flock here,
Still unconcerned
The waves roll in
To break and scatter
On the beach.

Alternative Scuba Rules

Don't feel bad if you haven't quite mastered the compass. The most interesting dives are led by Divemasters who don't know how to use one. Most Instructors often mistake it for their watch.

Buy your Dive Instructor a drink. They're the one most likely to save you if things go wrong - advertising yourself as a source of free drinks provides them with a vested interest in your well-being.

Do not look at the picture on your Certification card - it will only make you feel ugly.

Accept certain inalienable truths: your power inflator will stick; you will get sand in your second stage; you, too, will pee in a rental wetsuit. And when all this happens, you'll fantasize that when you were a newbie, power inflators never stuck, you never inhaled sand, and nobody ever peed in rental wetsuits.

Fire Damages Alexandria Library

A fire broke out on Sunday 2nd March in the sleek, new Alexandria library, sending thick smoke swirling through the building that opened to international fanfare in October.

The fire, which lasted about 45 minutes, appears to have been caused by a short circuit in the fourth-floor administrative area of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina - the waterfront site of what was the most renowned library of the ancient world.

Authorities evacuated the 11-story building and 29 people were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

The fire was confined to the administrative area and no books were destroyed. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina re-opened later on Sunday.

That Sinking Feeling

Two boats from the Speedy fleet - numbers 2 and 3 - sank yesterday in front of the refueling station at the Marine Club, Hurghada. The boats were moored together when one caught fire, due to an electrical problem, which quickly spread to the other.

The Red Sea Aquarium (Hurghada) is located on Cornich Street (Downtown), between the Three Corners Hotel and the Shedwan Village Hotel. It is open daily from 9am to 10pm and entry costs just 5LE for adults, free for children.

The aquarium houses a variety of marine life in 63 different glass tanks with information about each specimen written in Latin, English, German, French and Arabic.

Although the aquarium is quite small and a visit will be quick, it still offers good, alternative entertainment for any child.
