The FIFA Inspection

The five-man FIFA inspection committee arrived in Egypt - their final stop on a tour that has taken them across the continent to South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya - to assess the competing nation's chances of hosting the 2010 World Cup.

The team were first lead straight to the Pyramids - not for sightseeing but to the site where, if Egypt wins the bid, the draw to determine who will play

whom in the World Cup will be made. Before heading off by train to Alexandra the delegation inspected areas of Gairo and Giza - in particular the stadiums - ending with a tour of the new Wadi Degla Sporting Club.

The trip to Alexandria included a visit to the Alexandria Library and visits to the facilities of the city - hotels, hospitals and clubs. The delegation also visited Borg Al-Arab Stadium, currently under construction. From Alexandria the delegation flew to Port Said to watch a friendly between the Swiss team Neuchatel and a watered down Egyptian team. Key members of the national squad are currently in Tunisia for the African Nations Cup. From Port Said the delegation toured the Canal cities of Port Said, Ismailia and Suez, after which they were flown by helicopter to Sharm El-Sheikh, and from here they took the ferry to Hurghada. In Hurghada they visited the site where the Hurghada international stadium will be built, and the Military Hospital. From there they took the bus to Luxor. It was then back to Cairo for a visit to the first International Health and Rehabilitation Centre on the Cairo-Ismailia desert road, which included a tour of the first international drugs and steroid sports lab in the Middle East, and a visit to the Military Academy Stadium.

The final decision for who will host the 2010 World Cup will be based on a multitude of factors - on the presence of cultural, social and historical diversity as well as on stadiums, infra-structure, safety, telecommunications and the perceived ability to implement submitted action plans. The decision will be announced in Zurich on 15th May following a vote by FIFA's 24 executive board members.

Sayed Darwish Theatre reopens as the Alexandria Opera House

The Sayed Darwish Theatre was built in 1921 to designs by the French architect Georges Barque. It is housed in a 2,568-square metre, three storey structure that is decorated with portraits of celebrated musicians. Barque's designs fused elements from the Vienna State Opera and the Odeon Theatre in Paris. Originally named the Mohamed Ali Theatre, the edifice on Fouad Street quickly established itself as the city's leading venue, hosting many of the era's most celebrated performers. In 1962 it was renamed the Sayed Darwish Theatre, honouring the doyen of Egypt's early 20th century musical pioneers.

The LE25 million restoration progressed in three phases. First the walls and foundations of the structure had to be stabilised by the injection of concrete. All internal and external additions to the original design were then removed. The second phase involved reconstructing the original decorative scheme, and the third and final phase included installing the kind of facilities and equipment that a world class opera house demands without impinging on the character of the original building. The restoration involved an extensive search in European theatres and opera houses, designed by the same architect, for original designs that might furnish clues as to the theatre's interior furnishings and decoration.
