Cairo Court Rejects Foreign Belly Dancers' Appeal

A Cairo court has rejected an appeal by a Russian and an Australian belly dancer against a ban on working in the country they consider the home of the dance. Lawyers for the Russian and Australian dancers had asked the court to overturn the ban so their clients could resume their nightclub work. However, the administrative court at the Council of State ruled that the Ministry of Manpower had the authority to prevent non-Egyptians from working in certain professions, including what Egyptians call Oriental dancing. The dancers could now take their case to a higher court.

Kitchen Korner

On 26th January 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip took formal possession of the colony of New South Wales and became its first Governor. The colony soon began to celebrate the anniversary of this date in the traditional manner with "drinking and merriment"!

The first official celebrations were held in 1818 to mark the 30th anniversary of white settlement.

Australia Day today is a community day, with formal ceremonies combined with local events and fun activities. Celebrations actively encourage participation of all Australians regardless of age, ethnicity and culture - the day belongs to the people.

So, act like an "Aussie" ... dig out your "barbie" and "russle" up a steak or two for all your "mates" and "rellies" and have a "ripper" of a time!!

Barbequed Marinated Flank Steak

1/4 cup soy sauce
3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 pounds steak

In a blender, combine soy sauce, honey, vinegar, ginger, garlic powder and vegetable oil. Blend for 15 seconds. Lay steak in a shallow glass or ceramic dish. Pierce flesh all over front and back with a sharp fork. Pour marinade over steak, then turn and coat the other side. Cover, and chill in the refrigerator 8 hours, or overnight. Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat. Place grate on highest level, and brush lightly with oil. Grill steak for 15 to 20 minutes, turning once.
