The Curse of the Mummies Tomb

For decades it has scared thieves and tomb raiders, awed travelers, supposedly killed a score of archaeologists and generated an endless stream of horror books, films and television series.

The story of the mummies’ curse first gripped the popular imagination during the excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb by the Egyptologist Howard Carter and his sponsor, Lord Carnarvon, which began in November 1922.

Tutankhamun’s "victims":

  • On the day Carter opened the tomb, a cobra ate his canary.
  • Lord Carnavon, sponsor of the expedition, died in April 1923 of pneumonia following an infected mosquito bite.
  • It was reported that Carnarvon’s dog howled and died at the same instant it’s master passed away and throughout Cairo all the lights went out in a power cut.
  • Aubrey and Mervyn, Lord Carnavon’s half-brothers, also died around the same time.
  • Georges Benedict, head of antiquities at the Louvre, died in 1926.
  • Arthur Mace, Carter’s assistant from New York, died in 1928 before the tomb was cleared.
  • Richard Bethell, Carters personal secretary, died in 1929.
  • Lord Westbury, Bethell’s father, also died at the same time.
  • A child aged 8 was killed by the hearse at Lord Westbury’s funeral.
  • Jay Gould, an American railway magnate, died after visiting the tomb.
  • An Egyptian who visited the tomb was later shot by his wife in the London Savoy and a French Egyptologist who saw the tomb died in a fall soon afterwards.

Freddy Vs. Jason

After saying a big "NO" to 'The Matrix Reloaded', making Egypt the only country in the world not screening the big science fiction blockbuster, the new horror shocker 'Freddy Vs. Jason’ will probably face the same fate by the Egyptian Censorship.

'Freddy Vs. Jason' is a sequel to two horror series. The first is 'A Nightmare On Elm Street', which spawned 6 movies starring Robert Englund as the disfigured serial killer Freddy Krueger who appears to teenagers then kills them in their dreams. The second was a more graphic series entitled 'Friday The 13th', which spawned 10 films that starred Jason, another blood thirsty monster.

Both series gained a cult status worldwide, selling millions of cinema tickets, videos and promotional material. The idea to group both characters in one film was surfacing for several years until the Hong Kong born director Ronny Yu has come to finally realize it in 'Freddy Vs. Jason'. Unfortunately, for those fans of these films living in Egypt, you may never get to see it.
