Canada To Host '4th AIDA Freediving World Championships for 2004'

On September 28th, the Association for the International Development of Apnea (AIDA), the world governing sport federation for competitive freediving, announced that the Canadian Association of Freediving and Apnea (CAFA) won the bid to host the '4th AIDA Freediving World Championships by Team 2004'.

August 4th - 12th, 2004, Vancouver, Canada will host upwards of 132 of the worlds best freediving athletes competing in two disciplines involving time and depth.

Static apnea is where an athlete on one breath of air floats face down at the waters surface for maximum time and where every six seconds of immersion equals one point. Current world records in static apnea are 8:06 for men and 6:16 for women. Constant ballast is where the athletes ascend and descend along a weighted line to depth under their own power and using the simplest of freediving equipment such as mask, fins, wetsuits and weight belts with each meter descended equaling one point. Current world records in constant ballast are 95m for men and 70m women. Each discipline involves combining points between three team members for a competition ranking.

First German University Abroad Opens in Cairo

As the first full-scale German institute of higher education abroad, the German University of Cairo plans to educate as many as 1,000 students per year.

The university’s founder, 41 year old Ashraf Mansour, got his inspiration for the school from his own studies in Germany from 1988-92. Mansour received a doctorate from the University of Ulm while studying there on a German government scholarship. Now, Mansour wants to share what he learned in Germany with his compatriots. Within five years, the college is hoping to attract 5,000 students, however, during the first year, approximately 1,000 students will be accepted, far fewer than the 3,500 who applied.

Parents & Kids Guide

Now that the kids are back at school, here are 10 Top Homework Tips:

  • Keep in touch with the teacher or teachers to be fully aware of the quantity and the quality of the homework.
  • Set a schedule, including both a beginning and an ending time. Most kids need some time to unwind after school before they tackle their homework. Doing it too close to bedtime may make it difficult due to fatigue. Thursdays are usually the best day for homework that must be completed over the weekend as assignments are still fresh in mind and last minute panic rushes are avoided.
  • Encourage your child to divide the homework assignment into "What I can do myself" and "What I need help with." You should help only with that part of the homework your child cannot do independently, as this builds responsibility and independence in your child.
  • Hold off on watching TV and other fun activities until homework is completed.
  • Provide a home study center for your child with adequate light and few distractions. Paper, pens, etc., should be readily available.
  • Use direct praise for doing the homework and even more for accomplishment.
  • Be available when your child is doing homework, so that you can answer a question if there is confusion. If possible, it is better for you to be in another room, so you are easily accessible and yet not a distraction.
  • Look over the homework when it is completed. Do not correct it unless you have checked with the teacher. Seeing the pattern of errors is often helpful to a teacher.
  • Study groups are often a good strategy. Your child may benefit from studying with one or two classmates. However, make sure they are using the time to study.
  • Allow bathroom, drink, and/or snack breaks, but insist on completion of tasks.
