Now Are You Glad You Live in Egypt?!

Mercer Human Resource Consulting recently surveyed living costs in 144 cities around the world and found Tokyo to be the priciest, followed by Moscow; Osaka, Japan; Hong Kong and Geneva.

Prices in Tokyo on average were 26.1% more expensive than in New York, which serves as the base city in the semi-annual survey.

Mercer Human Resource Consulting compares costs for more than 200 items including food, clothing, housing, transportation and entertainment to come up with an index number for each city. The data is compiled into reports that are used by government and private-sector employers to calculate expatriate cost-of-living allowances.

Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay, had the cheapest cost of living among the 144 cities surveyed. Costs in Asuncion were a little more than one-third the cost of comparable goods and services in New York. Other inexpensive cities were Buenos Aires, Argentina; Bogota, Colombia; Harare, Zimbabwe; and Blantyre, Malawi.

West El-Balad, the Boy Band Taking Egypt by Storm

With a revolutionary mix of jazz, rock, blues and Arab music, boy band West El-Balad is taking Egypt’s youth scene by storm, in a craze for a new brand of modern music that shows no sign of letting up.

The band’s eight members, aged from 22 to 38, dress casually in T-shirts and jeans, and sport a variety of hair-do’s. At the heart of their music is what they call “Cairo’s perpetual effervescence”, and significantly, their name, which means (town center), is a reminder of their lean years, when the only places they could practice were the capital’s back streets and alleyways.

Of the eight members, six have never taken singing or music lessons, learning to play guitars and percussion instruments by ear. Formed four years ago, the group only hit the big time a year ago, after playing during a festival, in the Cairo underground. The group performs songs written by young Egyptian writers, as well as rock and jazz arrangements of the music of Egypt’s most famous composer, Sayed Darwich, who died in 1926, and the poetry of eighth-century bard Bashar Ibn Borod or the Communist Naguib Sorur. Teenagers are crazy about their music, which they herald as a breath of fresh air to an otherwise stagnant business.

Today, the band’s dream is to conquer the world and perform with a symphony orchestra at the Cairo Opera House
