Egyptian 'Baywatch' to Show Off Country's Beauty
CAIRO (Reuters) - Forget California. A cast of stunning swimsuit-clad stars will soon hit Egypt's Red Sea coast to film a "Baywatch" inspired television series which promises sun, sea, action and romance.
Producer Yousef Mansour thinks "Baywatch," a U.S. show about sexy lifeguards in California nicknamed "Babewatch" by viewers, offers the perfect formula for showing off some of the natural attractions of Egypt -- a predominantly conservative, Muslim country where many women are veiled.
"I loved 'Baywatch' and decided it was a good vehicle to promote many things in modern Egypt, to show beautiful beaches and the reefs -- our underwater treasures," Mansour said. "And we will show beautiful girls. Yes, we will have beautiful girls and we will have beautiful guys," he told Reuters.
The series, called "Action in Hurghada," will revolve around a team of life guards of Arab and other nationalities, who perform sea rescues, crack crimes and capture villains. Filming is due to begin in October.

"It's an action, love, adventure drama," said Mansour, a middle-aged Egyptian kung fu film star who will play a starring role." Action in Hurghada" has drawn support from the diving organization PADI International, which told Reuters it had agreed in principle to offer support, including a contribution to the initial production costs and diving-training for the rescue team of 10 women and five men.

BEACH BEAUTIES Casting for the swimsuit roles is due to begin in June. "We are looking for good-looking people but it's not a beauty contest. They have to be charming, they have to be a certain height and they have to have a sportive attitude," Mansour said. The good looks of candidates who had already come forward from Lebanon and Syria promised to make the cast of "Action in Hurghada" even more beautiful than that of "Baywatch," which shot buxom actress Pamela Anderson (news) to global fame, Mansour said.

"Our models are even better looking than in the U.S.," said Mansour, spreading a dozen photos of Syrian and Lebanese women across his desk. "On the beach they will wear swimsuits." Bare skin is rarely seen in seaside towns frequented by average Egyptians, where if women bathe, most of them do so fully clothed. More revealing swimwear is the norm in Egypt's Red Sea resorts such as Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh which are popular with foreign tourists.
TENDER KISSING Mansour said he did not expect criticism from religious circles, even though he intends to show on-screen affection rarely seen in public or in films and television shows now produced in Egypt -- the Arab world's Hollywood. "I'm not portraying anything bad. This will be done with class and respect," he said. "There won't be any sex -- just tender kissing and people in love."

Boosting Egypt's vital tourism sector -- which was hit by Islamic militant violence in the 1990s, the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and the Iraq (news - web sites) war -- was one of the main aims of the series, which Mansour said had received financial support from private Egyptian backers to cover the costs of 50 45-minute episodes.

The show, whose script will be in a mix of Arabic and English, was close to distribution deals with Far Eastern and Arab firms and had secured a deal with a U.S. distributor, Mansour said.

Once dubbed and exported, Mansour hoped the series would change and modernize views of the Middle East. "The foreign view is that there is nothing but war and killing in the Middle East. In the West, our image is of people driving camels," he said. Several Arab satellite stations had already asked about screening the series, Mansour said, adding that it would not shock Arab viewers who were already used to watching an array of foreign satellite channels.

Final casting is due to take place in the Red Sea resort of el-Gouna in August and September. Mansour has invited "Baywatch" star and producer David Hasselhoff (news) to the final selection event.

Chicken Quesadillas
4 tortillas
2 chicken breast halves, cut into strips
1/2 onion, cut into strips
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced into strips
2 tablespoons salsa* see recipe below
2 garlic cloves, minced or shredded
2 ounces shredded cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon olive oil

2 tomatoes, diced
1/2 onion, finely diced
1 lime, juiced
1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
pinch of cumin
salt and pepper
For a variation on the salsa, try adding finely diced yellow or red bell peppers and green onions.

1. Make the salsa by mixing all the ingredient together and allow to sit at room temperature while preparing the quesadillas.

2. In a large skillet, heat 1/2 tablespoon of the olive oil. Add the chicken breast and saute until cooked through. Remove chicken from skillet and set aside.

3. Put the remaining olive oil in the hot skillet and saute the onion until tender. Add the green bell pepper and saute until tender. Add the minced garlic and saute until the aroma is strong; add the 2 tablespoons of salsa and the chicken breast. Stir all together. Set aside and keep warm.

4. Heat another skillet, add one flour tortilla. Spread 1/4 of the shredded cheese on the tortilla and add half the chicken/pepper mixture. Add a sprinkle more cheese and top with another tortilla. Flip when small brown spots start to appear on the bottom tortilla. Grill on the opposite side until brown and the cheese has melted. Remove the quesadilla from the skillet and let cool for 1 minute, then cut into quarters. Repeat for the second quesadilla. Serve with sour cream and extra salsa.

Tortillas can be found in the frozen foods section at the Abu Ashara Supermarket on Sharia Sherton Road or the Abu Ashara opposite HSBC Bank.
